History

The Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, unique in the civic foundations of its inception, was founded in 1743 by 16 music-loving Leipzig merchants. The Stiftung Zukunft Gewandhaus zu Leipzig, established in 2023, continues this tradition of civic engagement, in order to sustainably promote the artistic preeminence and innovative ventures of the Gewandhausorchester.

Establishment of the Foundation

The Gewandhausorchester Leipzig has for many decades maintained its position as one of the preeminent ensembles – and preeminent brands – in the global classical music scene. The Orchestra must retain its prestigious status amidst the intense competition at the pinnacle of the music world. It can only live up to these superlative standards if, alongside its artistic distinction, it places strong emphasis on innovative projects that afford the international music world new and pioneering impetus long-term.

The fact that Leipzig is so richly blessed with music-making of superlative quality is neither a coincidence nor simply a matter of course; this cultural wealth has always been dependent upon the active support of committed benefactors. In 2023, on the initiative of Gewandhaus General Director, Prof. Andreas Schulz, the Stiftung Zukunft Gewandhaus zu Leipzig was established as a modern-day, long-term pillar of the Gewandhausorchester’s financial architecture. On 7 December 2023, the foundation was legally recognised by the Foundation Authority of the State Directorate of Saxony.

Since its establishment, the Stiftung Zukunft Gewandhaus zu Leipzig has made a significant contribution to the preservation and development of the Gewandhaus and its Gewandhausorchester.
